Green Card
A United States Permanent Resident Card is the ID card for someone who's a permanent resident but not a citizen of the US. Better known as a Green Card, it gives the owner proof that they have permission to live in the US permanently and to work there too. It also goes by the name of Permanent Resident Card. A former card used to be printed on green paper and hence the informal name. Now, the only green color is used on the reverse of the card for the lettering. To apply for a Green Card, you have to be patient because it can take a long time to process sometimes.
Owners of the Green Card must carry it on their person all the time, according to law. It has the name of the holder and some other information. When you apply for a Green Card, you have to supply an up to date photograph. The card is issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
There are steps you have to go thru in order to be legal. When you apply for a Green Card, the length of time it takes is determined on the sort of application involved and the country of origin of the applicant. The USCIS sanctions a petition by a relative or an employer. The State Department gives out an Immigrant Visa number, but this is not needed if the applicant is a close relative. These numbers have a limit every year and that's why there are so many delays. Most applicants have to be put on the waiting list. Those who are a close relative don't have to go on the list. A husband or wife is accepted as a close relative, or children who are under twenty one years old with parents who are US citizens. Parents who have children over twenty one years old and are US citizens are also eligible.
When the all important Immigration Visa number is issued, the applicant must officially apply for a Green Card by asking that their status be altered to that of permanent resident. If the applicant lives outside of the US at the time, they can still get their Immigrant Visa at their nearest US Consulate. When that's arranged, they can enter the US. There is certainly an amount of bureaucracy attached to the process, when you apply for a Green Card, but it's worthwhile in the end.
